Chapter 4: Death can happen in a heartbeat

----------

Derrek darted between houses to evade his chasers. He was in the center of the town and it would take a little while to reach the trees, just enough time for the three creeps to surround him. He passed house after house. Twice he had to turn the other direction to avoid one of Pete's followers. He hadn't worry about pete, He was always following behind somewhere to keep Derrek from doubling back.

After what felt like forever, Derrek managed to reach the edge of town. Instead of heading upward into the mountains, though, he found himself on the lower part of town. Looking back for a second, he saw the three of them side by side running toward him. Looking back forward, he darted into the trees. The Slope of the land was steep and Derrek found it hard to keep his footing. yet the sounds of the three behind him was enough to keep him going.

Their yelling and calls grew louder and Derrek knew he was losing ground ahead of them. Picking up his pace he continued to run. He ran and ran, each breath fealt like painful stabs in his chest. He failed to notice the ground beginning to level.

Suddenly the ground level so abruptly that Derrek lost his footing and began to roll forward to avoid falling flat and keep his momentum. Bad mistake. A second past and just before he got through mid-roll, the trees subsided to a rocky cliff, and Derrek found himself falling. Instinct and reaction allowed him to reach for the cliff. He slid down several times from momentum, but eventually got a firm grip. He hung there, his right arm dangled freely in the air, while his left hand grasped a rock firmly in place in the cliff. He looked down to see the the rocky ground three stories below. Panic began to take over. Trying to calm himself as best as he could, he turned his Eyes upward. he was a good twenty feet from the top.

Lodging his free hand and feet into the cliff, he secured his hold. He forced his gut flat on the cliff, the bumpy rocked pressing into his chest and knees.

"Well, well. What do we have here?" Came a familiar voice from above. Derrek looked upwards and saw Pete and his lackies gazing down at him. The two lackies had scared and concerned faces.

"Pete, I think we should go get help. If he falls he could die." Came the boy at Pete's right.

"Nonsense. The worst he'll get is a broken leg, and besides, the police will ask how he got there. What do you think's ganna happen? We'll get caught, thats what."

"But, come on, Pete! We can't just let him hang there!"

At this point Pete grabbed the boy's shirt and rose him to eye level, his feet leaving the ground. "You want to join him?"

The boy shook his head.

"Good. Now go back to town. Speak to no one of this, otherwise it will be you next on the cliff side."

Pete turned and walked away, pushing the other boy to the ground out of his way. The two lackies looked down at Derrek, then at eachother, then followed after Pete.

----

Hours Past and Derrek lost all feeling to his arms and legs. The sun was setting and the air began to grow cold. He knew he couldn't stay there much longer. Eather tiredness or exaustion would make him fall. For a good half hour he yelled at the top of his lungs for help, only to hurt his voice. No one came.

Derrek hung there, face pressed against the rock. He tried to put as little weight on his arms and legs as possible. Then the only sollutions came to him: Climb or Fall.

Derrek looked up. Risking letting one hand free, he straitened it out for the next grip hold. He fingered the cliff and found a firm hold. Success. Pulling himself up, he search for a foot hold. Just as he found one, it collapsed and he lost his grip. He slid fast and painfully down the cliff, only to stop soon after. He was now right in the center of the cliff side. Pain beamed through his knees, and chest from scrapes caused by the slide. Eyes Glacy, he tried again.

He lost his grip entirely and plummeted to the ground. He fell for a good three seconds before he landed on his back with a thud, breaking his right leg on a rock. He scrame in agony at the top of his lungs. He layed there for a long time. When the pain eventually died down to a painful throb, he forced himself to sit upright. Trying his best to pull up his jenes, he cried out from the effort. When He finished, he panted hard from the exertion. He gasped afterwards at what he saw.

The bone under his knee was broken in half, the lower half sticking out into the air. It was a grousome sight.

At that moment he began to think. If he didn't get back to town, his leg would get inected and he would die. But he couldn't move. What if a beast like a pack of wolves come? They would smell his blood and come running. He didn't like the thought of being torn apart.

With that realisation in mind, he forced himself to crawl to a nearby tree. Eyes blurry, he could bearly make out what anything was. The tree he tried to reach was the only one among rocks. He would snap off a limb and make a cruch so he could walk. Then, he would find a way back up the cliff. His limp leg rubbed against the rocky ground, making his wince. It took him five long, painful minutes to reach the nearest tree. He stopped to rest, then Pulled himself up to a branch that could hold his weight. When he pulled himself uprgight, the limb broke, causing him to fall forward on his face. His leg burned in pain, and he fainted.

-------

Derrek woke to the night sky. He could hear crickets and the howls of wolves. Wolves! He slowly stood up and reached for his cruch. Getting upright, he limped on, walking parallel to the cliff wall. It went on for however long, he could not tell. Would he find a way up?

He walked for a half hour and still no sign of the cliff ending. Just as he was about the cry out in frustration, he heard a growl behind him. His heart skipped a beat at what he thought it to be. Turning slowly around, he saw a timber wolf glaring at him, baring its fangs. Derrek began to back up slowly, only to hear another wolf behind him. He kept changing course, only to be blocked by another wolf. Eventually, he was surrounded by seven wolves in total.

They were yet to attack. They had no reason to rush, they knew he would be easy prey with an injured leg. Derrek looked around him. His only exits blocked by wolves bent on eating him, and a wall behind him. There was no escape.

Suddenly, the first wolf attacked. It jumped and pushed him to the ground, biting at his arm. The others joined the frey until Derrek was under teeth and fur from everywhere. He Cried in agony from the bite marks, doing his best, but without success, to fight them off.

Suddenly a loud roar was heard. Derrek, eyes closed, no longer fealt the bites from the wolves. Instead, he heard a number of growls and snarls. Slowly opening his eyes, he saw the only hope he had since the mad chase.

Leocyn was here.

Leocyn was low to the ground, snarling like a ferral dog at the wolves. One wolf charged, only to be swiped by Leocyn's claw and thrown into the cliff wall. The wolf shook itself, then continued to snarl at Leocyn. Then, the wolves attacked all at once.

It was a bloody fight, several managed to bite Leocyn, leaving bloody wounds in his shoulders and legs. Leocyn swiped and snapped, killing two of the wolves. After killed the second wolf, the pack realised they were outmatched and ran off into the woods, tails between their legs.

Leocyn looked at Derrek, Anger and worry in his eyes.

"How did you-" Derrek tried to speak.

"I decided to watch the town from the safety of the trees. I heard a comosion of you missing and desided to look for you. An hour later I heard picked up your scent and followed." Without further Speach, Leocyn walked toward Derrek and proceeded in picking him up in his claws. Derrek gasped from the pain all over his body, but didn't resist.

When Leocyn had a firm grip, he leapt into the air and over the cliff.
